Origin of Peels
Skin peels have a very long history. Ancient Egyptians applied sour milk to their skin, this milk containing lactic acid and an alpha hydroxy acid helped rejuvenate the skin. In Roman times, people would use fruit such as grapes to exfoliate their skin. The active ingredient responsible for the use of grapes was tartaric acid. After being eclipsed in the early 2000s by new skin-resurfacing lasers, these classic treatments (like, ancient-Egypt classic) are back on top!
What are Peels?
Chemical peels are an exfoliation process that penetrates deep into the skin. It rejuvenates the skin by removing the keratin layer of dead skin cells that sits on the skin’s epidermal surface and by stimulating the production of new healthy epidermal cells.
Overall the process stimulates collagen and increases cellular turnover to reveal new, fresh skin, giving a tightening effect and a more even distribution of melanin.
The depth and type of peel chosen to treat the patient is dependent on their skin type and skin disorder being treated. Some of the treatable skin disorders and concerns include:
- Photodamage and pigmentation
- Anti-ageing
- Reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles
- Improve tone and texture
- Lighter and brighter skin
- Reduce open pores
- Decrease acne and scarring
- Stimulate cell renewal
- Renewal of the skin’s structure by stimulating collagen and elastin
