What is Blue Light?
Blue Light are wavelengths on the blue end of the visible light spectrum. Blue light emitted from most digital devices, including your smartphone, computer and tablets, where the damage is up close and personal. Find out more about Blue Light damage and how to help prevent it.
Could Blue Light be damaging our skin?
Dermatologist Dr. Justine Kluk indicates in an article by Jo Taylor Jan 2019 it’s an area that we’re learning more about all the time. But what we do know for sure is that if you’re prone to or at risk of getting pigmentation, then blue light could worsen or trigger it.
Chemist Nicolas Travis outlines in the same article by Jo Taylor that studies have already shown that blue light can penetrate deeper into the skin than UV rays. While we’re not exactly sure how it may affect everyone’s skin just yet, it’s something we put under the umbrella term called ‘pollution damage’, where our exposure to it is almost unavoidable, and the effects could be cumulative.
Shari Marchbein, Dermatologist and Clinical assistant professor at New York University states: “There’s also evidence that as blue light penetrates the skin, reactive oxygen species are generated, which leads to DNA damage, thereby causing inflammation and the breakdown of healthy collagen and elastin, as well as hyperpigmentation (Mackenzie, 2018)”.
Blue Light and pollution damage can potentially result in a break down in our skin’s barrier leading to SKIN BURNOUT. Overall the signs of SKIN BURNOUT consist of:
- Fatigue – Skin that looks flat, dull and prone to increased lines and wrinkles
- Dry – Dehydrated skin leading to persistent dryness
- Sensitive – Skin becoming sensitive resulting in redness and irritation
- Unresponsive – Your skin is no longer responding to products you are currently using
